Music has existed since the dawn of man and remains a link across geographical, social and cultural boundaries. No matter what kind of music, be it jazz, African drumming, grunge, classical, folk, world beat, or the blues - it is the rhythm that moves and inspires the listener. Musicians and non-musicians alike live at Just About Music (JAM) and are united by a passion and appreciation for its universal language.

At JAM any and all musical interests are embraced, providing a unique and stimulating environment to share and relate to other residents through the medium of music. Whether you are an avid listener and lover of music, a shower singer, or have a more serious desire to become an accomplished musician, a sound-board techie motivated to capture just the right rift, or a professional singer, at JAM you can explore all your musical desires. Of the 144 students living at JAM, only a hand-full are music majors. JAM is for everyone with a passion for music, life and learning.

Along with lounges to study and socialize, you will find a music-lover's dream home. There are practice rooms, regularly tuned pianos, a drum set, a concert stage with lighting and sound, a CD library, and even a recording studio where residents can document their musical progress and record their own demo's. In fact, JAM residents have recorded and produced their own compilation CD. JAM is conveniently located on north campus near bus routes and two community centers that accommodate award-winning dining facilities, mail services, a fitness center, and on-going student activities.

At JAM, performance and listening opportunities abound. There are concerts featuring house groups playing everything from folk, ska, punk, and techno. On the quieter side, there is a monthly open-mic coffeehouse for writers, musicians, singer-songwriters, and dancers to perform for the Cornell community. This is not only great entertainment, but offers a social atmosphere to meet new friends. There are many other opportunities to perform with campus groups such as the Glee Club, Cornell Chorus, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensembles, the Big Red Marching Band, and other musical functions throughout the Ithaca community. Then, there are the weekly ''Listening Parties'' to give JAM residents a study break to listen and discuss new music releases and different genres like soul, country, rhythm and blues, and opera

Needless to say, there is never a shortage of music or entertainment at JAM. But, despite what you may be thinking, JAM can be as quiet as any other residence hall. The practice rooms and recording studio follow regular quiet hours. After all, JAM residents are students who have to study just like everybody else, but they tend to do it while tapping their foot lightly to a quiet rhythm that resides within.

''Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons, and you will find that it is to the soul what the water-bath is to the body.''

-- Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
